ELPH’s collaborators formed as a group out of the collective belief that the outcome of design should embody more than a pragmatic solution.
Through the continuing discussion we believe that design can also be a process of exploration into concepts that question one’s perception of the environment and should enhance the experience of it. We are involved in the exploration of the notion of environmental metaphysics. We are interested in the theory of the environment; of the parts or regions of space in which organisms live and move. The notion that the environment is a volume of space that is specific to the location, site and habitat; a milieu of a given intention or idea, as well as the ontological sense of space and how this may inform certain ecological concepts such as territory, habitat, and niche.
We each have unique backgrounds in science, philosophy, art & object based design and we recognized that our common interests, despite our diverse backgrounds, prompted the desire to explore the boundaries between these different disciplines within the context of interior design. We are still a developing design practice, and our interests lie within the realms of spatial negotiation and how space can be constructed to create a memorable event or encounter.
